Three Cups ofTea
I think that what Greg Mortenson did for the people in is awesome. What made me the most happy was that he kept his word. By building the schools and educating women, he helped to stimulate their economy and gave everyone in the village hope for a better life. True success is done in small steps. At first I was a little bit disappointed that not all the women were able to further thier education but instead learn a vocational trade like how to sew, but then I realized that we have to learn how to walk before we can run. By teacher them how to sew, they are able to help support their family and stimulate the economy. Another thing that the community is being taught is personal hygiene. The CAI is also helping to provide clean drinking water. Dirty water is one of the main causes of death of a child. It makes you appreciate the fact that we can just go to the faucet and get water that won't kill us. It makes me feel bad for not wanting to wake up early for school. I should consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to further my education and I am blessed to be able to learn whY I need to so that I can do what makes me happy. Knowledge is power.

I agree that, ideally, a higher level education would be available to the women in this program. It's unfortunate that education is viewed with suspicion and occasionally contempt in many parts of the world, even some places here in the United States.
ReplyDeletewe have to learn how to walk before we can run, thats a really important statement that we have to keep in mind in order to keep getting better.
ReplyDeleteI think most if not all of the students in countries where mid level education and below is easily accessible should be ashamed. Everyone, at least the students, take it for granted.
ReplyDeleteI think it is hard but very useable to use perspectives when rating our own life standards. To think of all we got instead of musts and what we don't have. To be happy for the little is always good, even though of course improvement is also desirable for everybody in every situation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you have said and I think Greg made the overall environment of their society so much better. If we had more people to help the less fortunate, I think our world would be a much better place.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to follow up on this comment regarding Greg Mortenson. I'm not sure if you're aware, but it's recently come to light that the majority of his story involving how he came to do charity work is entirely fabricated. Additionally, reports suggest that less than half of CAI's income for 2009 was spent funding charity work in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
